Public health ethics is a critically important aspect of public health practice, whether one is actually making the decisions or executing the plans of someone else. It is important for public health professionals to pause and reflect on their decisions and actions, to be confident in what they are doing, and to be able to justify publicly that their actions are intended for and serve the public interest.
In order to engage in ethical public health actions, one must understand what public health ethics actually is, as well as how it has been applied in similar and different contexts. It also helps a great deal to have approaches and tools that will facilitate reflection and practice through deliberation.
This module was created in collaboration with Michael Keeling and Olivier Bellefleur at the National Collaborating Centre for Healthy Public Policy (NCCHPP).The NCCHPP is part of a network of six collaborating centres financed by the Public Health Agency of Canada. The centres are located across Canada, each with its own area of interest and expertise. The NCCHPP is hosted by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec, in Montréal.
